The R&D activities of biotechnology companies are often co-located in universities and technology parks. There are eleven universities across NSW and five technology parks with close links to these universities. These technology parks form 'clusters' of life science companies and research organisations.

The NSW Department of State and Regional Development supports the BioFirst Biotechnology Precinct at the Australian Technology Park in Sydney. Many innovative life science companies are based in this Precinct.
