Industry Overview

New South Wales is a major economic force in the Asia Pacific, rivalling Singapore and Hong Kong as a location for international business. Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, is the second largest financial centre in Asia and is host to 470 regional headquarters of multinationals, including many in the life science industry.

New South Wales has the highest level of R&D investment in life science in Australia: approximately $1 billion per annum. Our contribution is particularly strong in the business sector (46% of Australian business investment in medical and health sciences occurs in NSW).

New South Wales has extensive research and commercialisation capabilities in drug discovery, medical device development and agriculture, supported by a network of world-class technology parks, high quality research facilities, government programs and ready access to Sydney's investment community.

Sydney is at the leading edge of pharmaceutical development and production in Australia. Biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies benefit from the many resident postgraduates in all life science fields. These range from those in contract research facilities to those who graduate from our world-class universities and teaching hospitals.
